Our History
The origins & History of Hill & Robb
1815
Mr Robert Hill
“On the 25th May 1815 Mr Robert Hill left Edinburgh for Stirling and commenced business for myself.
On 1st July 1823 I entered into partnership with George McGowan, nephew of the late Colin Dawson, for seven years conform to Contract.”
The above is a note from the first ledger started by Robert Hill as he began life as a solicitor in Stirling. This was not the beginning of the story as Colin Dawson set up a legal practice in Stirling probably earlier than 1800. Thus the firm was founded by Colin Dawson probably in 1798 with his office in Broad Street, Stirling.
1881
Mr Alexander Hill
Mr Robert Hill died in 1846. Mr Alexander Hill, his son, entered into partnership with Mr Cathcart, Writer, Glasgow, and Mr John Davidson, Writer, Stirling, joined the firm, which then became Hill, Cathcart & Davidson.
Mr Davidson left the partnership and commenced business on his own account, and Mr Hill and Mr Cathcart, under the firm name of Hill & Cathcart, carried on business until 1881. On Mr Cathcart’s death in that year, Mr Robert Whyte was assumed a partner and the firm became Hill & Whyte.
Mr Alexander Hill died in 1885. Mr Robert Alexander Hill was assumed a partner in that year. Mr Hill retired from the firm on 21st June 1929.
1925
Mr J N Dandie
Mr J N Dandie came from Edinburgh in 1925 to assist Mr Robert Whyte and was assumed a partner a year later.
After Mr Whyte’s death in February 1939, Mr Dandie carried on the practice on his own until August 1939, when he assumed Mr James Cochran as his partner.
1967
Mr Henry Robb
In 1967 the firms of Hill & Whyte and Welsh & Robb amalgamated and Mr Henry Robb joined the partnership which now practised under the name of Hill & Robb.
